What Is the Purpose of a Pregnancy Confirmation Appointment?

A pregnancy confirmation appointment goes beyond an over-the-counter pregnancy test. There are other important things you’ll need to know about your pregnancy that may impact the future decisions you make regarding it.

1. Am I really pregnant?

A lab-quality pregnancy test is important to confirm your pregnancy more definitively. A lab-quality test directly measures the hCG levels in your urine for a more accurate test result. Jewel Women’s Center offers no-cost, lab-quality pregnancy testing so you can feel more confident in your test results. This is part of our pregnancy confirmation appointment.

2. Is the pregnancy viable?

If you receive a positive result on a pregnancy test at Jewel, we may offer you an early pregnancy ultrasound. An ultrasound with a medical sonographer is extremely important to help confirm your pregnancy is developing in the right place and to check for a heartbeat.

This information can be especially important if you are considering abortion. Early pregnancy loss, also called miscarriage, is common. In fact, about 10% to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage. Before making a decision or scheduling a procedure, an ultrasound can help you better understand what is happening in your body and what next steps may be available to you.

3. How far along is the pregnancy?

An ultrasound is a solid way to confirm how many weeks along you are in your pregnancy. If you are considering abortion as a pregnancy option, this part of the appointment is very important to know what is possible. At Jewel, we do not provide abortions, but we do provide ultrasounds at no-cost to you as part of our pregnancy confirmation process to help you gather all the information you need to make a decision.
