What does ectopic mean?
Ectopic means not in the right place. Normally, a pregnancy grows within the central lining of the uterus. But, sometimes a pregnancy attaches to the fallopian tube, a thinner area of the uterus, or even another organ within the pelvis. This is what ectopic means when referring to a pregnancy.
Are ectopic pregnancies dangerous?
The uterus is designed to support a developing pregnancy, but other areas of the body are not. Ectopic pregnancies are dangerous because a pregnancy cannot be properly supported outside the uterus.
A growing pregnancy requires a large blood supply, as well as the ability to stretch without harm to the body. As it grows and stretches, the pregnancy pulls on the site it is attached to, so if that site is not able to accommodate, it will tear causing bleeding.
An ectopic pregnancy located in the fallopian tube can cause the tube to burst open. Without treatment, the ruptured tube can lead to life-threatening bleeding. The main symptoms to look for are pelvic pain, especially on one side of the pelvis, and possible vaginal bleeding. Because ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening complication, it is important to consult a medical professional if you have these symptoms.
Ectopic pregnancy and abortion bans
Experts estimate 1 in 50, or 2%, of pregnancies in the US are ectopic. Since the reversal of Roe V. Wade, there has been confusion about whether the small percentage of women who experience an ectopic pregnancy could be treated if abortion is banned where they live. To be clear, there are no restrictions or threats to a doctor for treating a patient with an ectopic pregnancy, even in states where abortion is banned.
Even in states with very restrictive abortion laws, there is always an exception for treating ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is never viable. In other words, an embryo growing in the wrong place cannot survive. The treatment of an ectopic pregnancy is considered a life-saving procedure for the pregnant woman. It is not an abortion procedure.
How do you know if you have an ectopic pregnancy?

If a woman is planning to take the abortion pill to terminate her pregnancy, it’s very important to first confirm the pregnancy is developing in the uterus. If she takes the abortion pill and has an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy, her life could be in danger. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, medication abortion – also known as the abortion pill – is not recommended for patients with confirmed or suspected ectopic pregnancy.
