“I’m pregnant.”
If you’ve just found out your teen is pregnant, you may be experiencing a flood of emotions including fear, disappointment, excitement, joy, anger, and confusion. Your child’s future is suddenly uncertain. What’s the best way for a parent to respond when they learn their teen is pregnant?
First and most importantly, take a deep breath and slow down. This is not the end of the world. Pause and think before you speak. Take time to sort through your words and feelings. If you’ve blurted out something you regret or sense your initial response was harsh, now is the time to apologize. The last thing you want to do is alienate your teen during this vulnerable and uncertain time.
Listen to your teen
This is an important time to listen to your child. She’s probably overwhelmed, frightened, and wondering about her options. Your teen needs you now more than ever. No matter what decisions have led to the current situation, telling you was a brave and mature step so let your response confirm it was the right thing to do.
Be supportive
Though it may not be easy at first, surround your teen with positivity as much as possible. As your teen makes decisions moving forward, a clear mind and conscious with serve her well and you can help foster this with loving support and open communication.
