There are many reasons a period can be late, but for many women, pregnancy is often the first thing that comes to mind. Asking yourself, “Am I pregnant?” can feel overwhelming, and it’s normal to be fearful and uncertain.
While pregnancy is one possible reason for a missed period, it is not the only reason your menstruation could be late. Read on to learn more about what a missed period can mean and what steps to take.
Is a Missed Period a Sign of Pregnancy?
Yes, pregnancy is one of the most common reasons a woman misses her period. When pregnancy occurs, a woman’s body begins producing hCG. This hormone tells her body to stop ovulating which stops her menstrual cycle, hence stopping her period.
If you miss your period, watch for other signs of pregnancy including more fatigue than usual, nausea, or tender breasts. These symptoms often accompany a missed period and could be a sign of pregnancy. However, they could also be linked to other common causes.
Other Common Reasons You Might Miss Your Period
There are many other things that could cause your menstrual phase to be delayed or missed. They include:
- stress and anxiety, which can impact your hormones
- significant weight gain or loss, especially if they are from eating disorders
- illness or infection that affect your body’s natural cycles
- hormonal imbalances from conditions like PCOS or thyroid issues
- stopping or starting hormonal birth control
- intense exercise that interferes with your body’s function
- irregular menstrual cycles in teens or those close to menopause
All these factors can temporarily disrupt your hormones and delay ovulation. If ovulation is delayed, your period may be as well.
When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?
It’s best to take a pregnancy test after your period is late. This will give you the most accurate result.
In a normal menstrual cycle, a woman ovulates about two weeks after the first day of her last menstruation. If she does not become pregnant, she will get her period again about 2 weeks after ovulating.
Taking a pregnancy test too early can give unclear results.

What If My Test Is Negative but My Period Still Hasn’t Come?
The timing of your period can fluctuate naturally, and it’s often nothing to worry about. Still, it makes sense to have questions or concerns, especially if you’ve had unprotected sex.
If your test was negative but your period still hasn’t come, wait a few days, and then take another test. Jewel Women’s Center can help you with this process. We offer free consultations that include a lab quality pregnancy test, ultrasound, and meeting with our nurse.
If you experience significant, unusual pain or abnormal discharge while you wait for your period to come, be sure to seek medical care. If you experience irregular periods quite often, it’s a good idea to see your primary care physician or a gynecologist.
